FCPS Student Advisory Council Member
June 8, 2017
What an honor to represent the FCPS Superintendent's Student Advisory Council at the FCPS Equity Stakeholder Meeting this afternoon. As the School Board confirms Dr. Scott Brabrand as our new Superintendent at tonight's regular meeting, 30 plus administrators, teachers, FCPS staff members and students, which represents 13 diverse groups, participated in an important discussion a the Willow Oaks Administrative Center focused on FCPS's 2017-2018 theme: equity.
Through a meaningful discussion with a member of the Elementary School Principal Association and then a table discussion with the President of Fairfax Education Association and members of the Fairfax Alliance of Black School Educators, I voiced my concerns that students faced at Langley. We came up with the phrase "equity of instructional delivery", to convey the message to the group that students taking the same courses are being taught different ways and graded through different standards. I shared our concerns with the whole group starting with the issues that we face in Langley where "same class, different teachers" results in different level of student engagement and grading differences; and then used the example from my English teacher teaching in two different FCPS High Schools to argue that inequity exists throughout the county.
Furthermore, towards the end of the meeting where participants were tasked to propose solutions, I passed on my suggestion to the group of adults that student facilitated discussions and student action is going to be a crucial step for FCPS to not only promote the idea of equity but also to implement the 2017-2018 theme in all of its educational facilities.
